The deputy director of the Department of Fisheries Momodou Sidibeh has returned home after attending a scientific event of fisheries experts. The event which brought scientists from all over the globe took place in Mauritania.
In an exclusive interview with this medium, Sidibeh said The Working Group (WG) is a scientific event of international scope organized every four years by the Mauritanian Institute for Oceanographic and Fisheries Research (IMROP). He said the main objective of this group is to contribute to the sustainable management of fisheries resources and the preservation of marine and coastal ecosystems. Mr. Sidibeh pointed out that, the mobilization and analysis of all available scientific, economic, and social data in particular to activities related to maritime and inland fishing were extensively discussed.
“The group, in this edition, paid particular attention to the integrity of the marine and coastal environment in the face of new challenges relating to climate change and the development of multiple competing uses of the marine environment,” Sidibeh said.
According to the Fisheries deputy director, the group of experts also delved into the aspects related to the management of fisheries taking into account the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF) and the development of new uses of the marine environment.
This tenth edition of the working group was dubbed "Development of fisheries resources and management of biodiversity in the service of sustainable development." Over one hundred renowned national and international experts in various disciplines attended the event, in addition to representatives of the Administration, of the professionals operating in the maritime field (Private and Civil Organizations in fisheries, including Oil Companies.)
